![]() Though these photos depict two different things, they also illustrate important values of our culture and society in two completely different time periods. Our nation has changed over the last several years, yet I feel it to be disrespectful to our past to vandalize and alter what one represented our nation.īeing polar opposites, these photos represent the old America and the new America. For this reason, I feel that the flag was chosen in specific, to criticize our country’s transition.I feel that though our country has become what it has, our history remains the same. It also possesses physical characteristics which represent our country’s past. The American flag is one of the most common and recognized cultural artifacts used to symbolize our country. The gun is also illustrated over the red and white portion of the flag, which represents the transition from purity (white) to bloodshed (red). Nowadays, it is very easy to buy a gun, which has lead to the violence and commonality of killing in our country. The gun may be thought to represent the business side of guns. ![]() Moreover, these companies have taken over in importance, when put in comparison to our country’s history. These companies have come to represent our country due to their popularity and immense power over our nation. I believe the logos to represent the corrupt greed and current day representation of our country. Over the thirteen red and white stripes, are the words “SOLD” written on a black gun. The next photo, on the other hand, appears to show an altered American flag, along with twenty-five common company logos in place of the fifty white stars. In putting the flag back up, we are symbolically asserting that our freedom cannot be taken away by anyone. The American flag is meant to symbolize the freedom of our nation, and the men who appear to be putting up the flag represent our society. In both visuals, men appear to be holding up flags and placing them back in the ground, implying that they may be physically taken down, but are spiritually indestructible. One of the basic aspects of “ American culture” is freedom, which is the main topic portrayed in the two photos. I feel that these two photos are also an accurate representation of the cultural aspects of our nation. Both of these photos, in representing what we truly value, emphasize America’s strength and willpower. The first illustrates Iwo Jima during WWII, and the second appears to illustrate New York after 9/11. ![]() In comparing the two, the two conclude that “the nation as a uniform or common “culture” is quickly becoming an old-fashioned notion in the “new world order.” In other words, our nation today, is not the same nation as it used to be.ĭepicted in the first photos are two representations of men holding up the flag after a disastrous incident. And as has our society, culture, and values. ![]() The American flag has been known to play an important role in representing our country’s history and this role has greatly changed within the last several years. Our flag is depicted with a blue square which consists of fifty white stars, one for each state, along with thirteen red and white stripes, which represent the thirteen colonies which declared independence in our country. Over the last few hundred years, our nation has been represented by our red, white, and blue national flag. ![]()
